Painting HQ’s is both intimidating and probably my favorite type of 40K unit to paint for a few reasons.
Why HQ’s are Intimidating to paint
- They’re leading the army so they have to be painted to a higher standard than say troops.
- HQ’s have a ton more detail which I tend to obsess over more than the average bear.
- The HQ models tend cost more money which “forces” me to go slower and be mindful of what I’m laying down.
- They get more attention than most other models on the board by opponents so I feel they have to be a little better painted than the rest.
Why HQ’s are favorite to paint
- Low unit-model count so completing a “unit” is less of a chore.
- They are larger scale (sometimes) which yields to my ham-fisted sloppy painting style.
- Fielding a painted HQ makes me magically play better so I’m compelled to not let them linger on the hobby desk.
- Tons of details to pick out which I both loathe and enjoy.
The last Waboss I painted was from my original score of Orks when I started back in 2013, specifically the model from the Assault on Black Reach box set. He’s been a staple in my lists and has always served me well. I do regret not noting down some of his notable victories on the tabletop, I mean he’s slayed countless Tyranids, smashed Imperial Fist’s faces en-mass, wiped out units of Necrons… and that’s just what I can recall from my broken memory.
So why paint a new Warboss?
[ Updated for 8th Codex release ]
Nooo! Grukk was not included in the 8th edition codex making his model a basic vanilla Warboss. Sure he has some cool wargear option modeled but talk about a kick to the gut. I love his model and painting it was fun, but I’m just heartbroken at this latest F-U to us Ork players. Hopefully his rules will make a come back.. but I won’t hold my breath.
Rules aside, I really did enjoy painting Grukk and will definitely field him on the tabletop soon. Check out the gallery below.
