Since I got into 40K, my daughter has always fancied seeing me working on “my guys” as she called them. She would suggest colors, see what cool new bits I had in the paint box and even organize the paint pots by some logic that escapes me. Her expressing interest in my hobby felt like her way of trying to get even more quality time with me, which I feel can never really be enough. As I get older, I see her interests start to broaden and my chances of her actually wanting to engage in the same hobby as mine as fleeting. I pounced when she asked to play 40k and we both thoroughly enjoyed the adventure.
Not long after being bitten by the playing bug, I asked to see if she wanted to try her hand at painting, which she emphatically answered “Really?! Paint my OWN guys?!“. I set her up with a few of the primed Grot Krew of the Smasha Gun I had freshly painted and set her to task. She took instruction very well and in less than an hour, had her base colors down and started cleaning up the mistakes that come with learning. She’s a crafting kid and I thought she’d do okay, but pleasantly surprised me with how well she did. She had such a good time that later the same day we went back to our FLGS and purchased a painting handle of her very own.
I hope this will become a weekly activity we both can spend a few hours at, enjoying each others company and strengthening the bond made through licking paint brushes. I didn’t snap too many pics of the session, but what I did take is below.
Excellent – always nice to see the next generation get involved.
I know, right?! Let the transformation into full-nerd begin!
